The historical market centre Mauterndorf invites you to relaxation and enjoyment and with its cafes and inns and in the numerous shops with Lungau specialities and souvenirs there is certain to be something for everybody.
In Lungau you will find idyllic places and villages with churches and museums and beautiful squares that invite you to linger awhile.

The TaurachbahnThe Taurachbahn was built in 1894 and is the highest narrow gauge railroad in Austria. The train with its nostalgia wagons travels between Mauterndorf and St. Andrä in the Lungau. Starting point of the trains is the station of Mauterndorf.
Castle MauterndorfThe castle Mauterndorf was built in the 13th century and offers the visitor an interesting trip into the Late Middle Ages. Besides the castle museum it also houses the Lungau County Museum.
The most famous alpine road in Austria leads into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner (3.798 m) and its glacier, the Pasterze. This alpine road is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Austria, With 48 kilometres and 36 bends with a rise to 2,504 metres you can expect a special nature and driving experience. You will experience the unique mountain world with blooming alpine meadows, wonderful mountain forests, mighty cliffs and permanent ice up to the foot of the Großglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-cave!
The drive into the Nockberge is a wonderful experience for every nature lover. The almost 15 kilometre Nockalm road combines in numerous gentle curves, the area of the wonderful Nockberge – Biosphere Park Lungau/Nockberge.
The Mountain Grosseck-Speiereck is an ideal excursion destination. Suitable for families with children, seniors, bus groups and school classes. There you will find paths of different lengths and degrees of difficulty. You can conquer the mountain not only on foot but also with the Grosseck train. Besides this, there is a well signposted mountain bike trail.
